Nessana Expedition

2026 Season
During the 2026 season, the work was focused on a new area at the
northern part of Nessana: Area DD. Travelers and explorers of the
early 20th century reported a Byzantine church in this part of the site,
later obscured by the Ottoman structures of Auja al-Hafir. The church
was found and fully excavated: it is a three-aisled basilica measuring
20 by 10 m, with mosaic floors and a baptistery chapel. The exposure
of the adjoining complex with mosaic-paved rooms – monastery of a
guest house - will continue in the next season.
